TRTA REGIONAL MEETINGS HELD IN OCTOBER
“TRTA Retirement – A NEW Beginning!”
Throughout October, TRTA leaders and members across the state gathered for the annual fall TRTA regional meetings in the three grand divisions.
Each of the regional meetings was conducted by TRTA President Bill Murray, President-Elect Dwayne Emert, and Past-President Judy Whitehill. TRTA Membership Chair Teresa Kelly led each morning session with local chapter members to generate ideas for a year-long recruitment campaign. Following table discussions, each local chapter shared one top idea that had been successful in their own chapter to recruit and retain members.
Next NEA-Retired board members Linda McCreary and JoAnn Smith-Mashburn provided updates on NEA and NEA-R, and Legislative Chair Ted Williams provided a synopsis of the past and upcoming legislative sessions.
Leaders also shared ideas for communicating with state legislators concerning current educational issues and encouraged members to make their voices heard. Though many channels are available, it seems the old-fashioned written letter has proven to be the best method to establish dialogue with state legislators.
At the West TN meeting, TCRS/TRTA Board member Mike Barker provided an update about the data breach at TCRS this past spring. Mike also provided information about the credit monitoring services that are available to our members.
TRTA webmaster Elizabeth Brown welcomed the Middle TN members at TEA with an opening song and provided an update highlighting the new and improved version of the TRTA website – visit the TRTA website soon!
Snacks and drinks were provided at each regional meeting for the members and leaders, and cash door prizes were awarded to the lucky winners. The top five membership percentage award winners for the past year in each region were presented with certificates of appreciation for their recruiting efforts. The Morgan County RTA was the top membership winner in the state with a 12.5% gain for 2020-2023! Donna Jerden is their chapter president.
TRTA would like to thank the TRTA Board of Directors members who attended the regional meeting in their area of the state. Special thanks also to former TEA President and TRTA member Barbara Gray for working the registration table in West TN, Maury Co RTA members Susie Boshers and Zelia Dinwiddie for working the registration in Middle TN, and Knox Co RTA members Jane Skinner and Libby Burney for working the registration table in East Tennessee.
Engagement of our local members is the key for our organization. What a blessing for TRTA to be better able to serve our members. We look forward to seeing everyone again at our spring regional meetings in March! Take care.
